After a couple weeks away I’ve been reading through my old posts and talking to friends about the top 4 and I realised something, Spurs are second and have been underrated. Is it because they are not really close to Chelsea in the title race? The drama going on with other clubs? Or because we have seen this before with Spurs where they look really good and bottle it at the end of the season. Arsenal have been celebrating St Totteringham’s day for a long-time but this year may be different.
At the moment Spurs are second in the table and are 11 points clear of Arsenal who have a game in hand. We have seen this before with them where they bottle it at the end of the season like last season. So I feel like I have to see it to believe it. Once they actually finish above Arsenal they will be taken seriously as a top team. In previous years they have had really good teams but they get to the point where they are nearly contenders and end up selling their best players. In 2008 they sold Berbatov when they had a decent team which halted their progress and in 2012 they had a team with world class players such as Modric and Bale but they they were both gone within a year. This has become part of a cycle for Spurs where they have to rebuild and then become a really good team. Fast forward 3 years later and Tottenham are back in the Champions League and look to have a good future ahead of them.
I think Pochettino is one of the best managers in Europe and I respect him for one big reason, he gets the best out of his players. Guardiola and Mourinho have complained a lot about their team and said they need to spend a lot of money but Pochettino has focused on getting the best out of what he has got and spent wisely. When he joined the club there were a few players who he got rid of straight away as they did not fit his plans such as Adebayor and Soldado. He now has a core of English players with Kane, Alli, Dier, Rose and Walker who have improved significantly since he became the manager. The team have gone from having older and slower players to having exciting young players who are aggressive and technically really good. At the back they have a world class goalkeeper in Hugo Lloris and a very solid defence with Alderweireld and Vertonghen at the back. I think Alderweireld is the best defender in England at the moment. In midfield they have athletic and physical players with Wanyama, Dembele and Winks. The most exciting part of the team for me is upfront. In particular I think Delle Alli is becoming a world class player. He will turn 21 next week and has scored 15 Premier league goals this season with 10 games left this season. Compared to other England greats he is already statistically performing better than Gerrard, Lampard and the same as Rooney at the same age. I think what makes him so good compared to other young players his age is how confident he is on the ball, it seems like he has been playing in the Premier League for 5 years. Along with him Harry Kane up front continues to prove people wrong. He has scored 20 premier league goals in the last 2 seasons and has 19 this season which proves his consistency as a top striker. A lot of people don’t rate him as highly as other players but his stats show that he should be recognised as one of the best strikers in Europe.
I think the one thing Pochettino is working on is changing the mentality of the club as they have been perceived to have a losers mentality by fans. The defeat to Newcastle last season which meant Arsenal finished above them really pissed him of. Whenever you talk about Spurs you have to mention Arsenal like they are the big brother. They are always in their shadow and have been below them for 21 years under Arsene Wenger. If they are to grow as a club they must end the curse this season. At the start of the 2018-19 season the development of White Hart Lane will be completed and they will be hosting 60,000 fans a game so the future looks positive with them now consistently finishing in the top 4. If they want to become champions I feel like they need a world class winger, that would take them to becoming the best team in England as they are not far of Chelsea. If they still had Bale or had brought Mane I would say they have the best team to win the Premier League. They must also not sell their best players at all costs as they will basically have to restart again like they did in 2008 and 2013. It is promising for Spurs fans that Kane, Alli, Dier and Vertonghen have all signed new contracts recently which can hopefully be the start of a new era for the club as consistent title challengers.
